Darren Schmidt is a dedicated family lawyer at Kidston Helm Ross, helping clients navigate the complexities of separation and divorce. His practice covers all aspects of family law, including divorce, parenting time and parental decision-making, child and spousal support, division of family property and debt, and emergency protection orders.

Originally from southern Alberta, Darren relocated to the North Okanagan in 2019. Before focusing exclusively on family law, he gained extensive experience handling civil litigation, employment and labor law disputes, contested estate matters, criminal defense, and administrative law cases.

Darren believes that most people don’t want to fight with their former spouse—they want peace, closure, and financial stability. He guides clients through separation using a structured, six-step approach that prioritizes clear resolution:

  1. Living separate and apart and ensuring everyone is safe;

  2. Arranging parenting time and parental decision making for any minor children of the relationship;

  3. Determining child support for any minor children of the relationship;

  4. Dividing family property and debts;

  5. Addressing any possible claims to spousal support; and

  6. Getting a divorce judgment (if the couple is married) or a final order / agreement if the couple is unmarried.

His goal is to resolve family law matters out of court through separation agreements, mediation, or arbitration whenever possible. However, when litigation is necessary, Darren is a strong advocate in both Provincial and Supreme Court.

Darren earned a Bachelor of Management from the University of Lethbridge in 2008 before completing his law degree at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law in 2014. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 2015 and the British Columbia Bar in 2019.

Darren is the co-host of the popular Divorced & Done Podcast, where he provides practical, accessible family law guidance. The podcast is available on all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts

Beyond podcasting, Darren shares family law insights on TikTok, helping educate individuals about their rights in an engaging, approachable way: TikTok – @familylaw_darrenschmidt.

"Speaking to a lawyer is intimidating at the best of times and can be stressful but Hands down I have to say this was the absolute best experience, I spoke with Darren Schmidt and he was polite, very knowledgeable, he answered my questions with answers that make sense to a person who does not know any legal jargon, he really did get the ball rolling when I was in a difficult spot, you can see when a person loves their career and their passionate for helping others."
